Talking it Out: A Useful Method of Dealing with Catastrophic Injuries

There are many types of injuries that can be categorized as catastrophic. The manner in which they affect the lives of the individuals who sustain them is equally diverse. NeuLife Rehab in Mount Dora, Florida offers innovative post-acute rehabilitation and specialized rehabilitation to Clients who have experienced catastrophic injuries, including of the following types:

  • brain injuries
  • strokes
  • limb amputations
  • spinal cord injuries
  • severe burns
  • motor vehicle accidents
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • work-related accidents
  • other catastrophic occurrences that result, present with and need difficult and challenging diagnoses.

In each case, the post-acute rehabilitation offered by NeuLife Rehab is designed and intended to assist the Client in achieving successful sustained outcomes and independence to the fullest extent that his or her physical and psychological condition allows. The rehabilitation addresses both the physical and the cognitive needs of the NeuLife Rehab Client.

Upon becoming a Client, the individual undergoes a comprehensive assessment with a Client Goal Plan meeting established for review by the Client, family members, nurse case manager and attorney, if applicable, at an initial Client Goal Plan Conference scheduled less than one week following admission. Each Client Goal Plan includes clinical needs for rehabilitation and covers personal goals and preferences of the Client. Therapies are provided by NeuLife Rehab full-time staff who are Florida licensed and/or certified professionals. The professionals include but are not limited to:

  • Board Certified Neurologist
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst
  • Board Certified Physiatrist
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Psychologist
  • Board Certified Psychiatrist
  • Speech Language Pathologist/Cognitive Therapist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Nurses
  • Certified Rehab Counselor

They and all other members of the NeuLife Rehab multidisciplinary team are devoted to to helping individuals with catastrophic injuries in this highly specialized program. This is fully in keeping with NeuLife’s dedication to consistently provide the highest standard of care in the delivery of clinically relevant services. NeuLife Rehab strives to achieve successful, sustained outcomes and exceed the expectations of all persons served.

The multidisciplinary team does not function alone in the rehabilitation of the Client. The Client is an active participant in the process. He or she is encouraged to express their feelings about the injury, the environment, their rehabilitation, and their goals and about their future.  Doing so is vital while they are a Client of NeuLife Rehab as well as thereafter. To that extent, the Client’s family is encouraged to be a part of the Client Goal Plan and Team Conference meetings so as to better educate themselves about how to support the Client during the transitions to different levels of supported living and ultimately, independence.

“Talking it out” encompasses a broader, less tangible, but equally vital element of the Client’s rehabilitation. While all that NeuLife Rehab does is Client-centric, talking it out is almost more so.  It involves the mind, a self-perception of worth, a memory of what was, realization of what is, and of what can be. NeuLife Rehab has as part of its multidisciplinary team, psychologists and psychiatrists and others who employ innovative therapies involving active listening techniques, and who can be far more objective in their assessment of Client needs than can family and friends who have had long relationships and a definite slant in approaching problems. NeuLife Rehab’s professionals, like the post-acute rehabilitation provided in general, are warm and nurturing and are there to rehabilitate, not to commiserate. The talk therapy that NeuLife Rehab’s professionals facilitate fosters complete honesty about feelings about the catastrophic trauma that Clients have sustained. It permits the professionals to get to work on rehabilitation leading toward independence.

Proper and timely post-acute rehabilitation that may determine the difference between disability and independence is what NeuLife refers to as the “platinum post-acute period” —  the crucial window following acute care that is needed to nurture the whole person to health with specialized, clinically relevant services.

NeuLife’s philosophy is that healing, wellness and personal fulfillment are best achieved in a positive and uplifting therapeutic environment where caring staff encourages, assists and supports each client so he or she may achieve specific goals. NeuLife believes personal fulfillment is equally as important as goals to achieve function and independence.
