Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries often result in the impairment of significant bodily functions. They can result from many kinds of occurrences, such as motor vehicle collisions, on-the-job accidents, falls and others. Regardless of the cause, the injury can be devastating to patients and families. The patient is unable to work, income sources diminish or, if the patient is the sole source of family income, regular earnings can entirely terminate. Even if workers compensation benefits are available, they take time to initiate and might not equal the patient’s pre-injury earnings. Likewise, if the patient was injured by the negligence of another, litigation takes time and, for many reasons, the patient and family may never be fully compensated for all that is lost.
When a spinal cord injury is identified, the victim enters the “acute-care” phase of treatment. In this stage, the victim is medically stabilized, typically in a hospital. Surgery may be performed and vital signs are closely monitored. When the victim is stabilized, either with or without surgery, medical treatment continues in a phase known as the “post-acute” treatment. The post-acute medical treatment, such as pain management, is often carried out in conjunction with post-acute rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy. The post-acute rehabilitation may be provided in the hospital or in a separate, specialized rehabilitation facility.
The reality is that no matter the quality of the post-acute care given to the patient who sustained a spinal cord injury, life for and the patient and his/her family will be different. There will come a point when the post-acute care has achieved all goals; but that may not be a level of function that resembles the patient’s pre-injury level and that affects everyone.
