The Platinum Post-Acute Period’s Critical Window
Proper and timely post-acute rehabilitation and care that may determine the difference between disability and independence is what NeuLife refers to as the “platinum post-acute period” — the crucial window following acute care that is needed to nurture the whole person to health with specialized, clinically relevant services.
As we have discussed, the term “Golden Hour” has special significance and is critical for an individual who has sustained a traumatic injury, regardless of its cause. The trauma may have resulted from a casualty, such as a fall, a motor vehicle collision or a workplace injury, or it may have resulted from a medical emergency such as a brain aneurysm or a heart attack. The salient factor, regardless of causation of the trauma, is that emergency, or “acute care,” must be obtained quickly, ideally within one hour. The duration of time between the occurrence and the rendering of acute care is often the determinant of survival and death. It is at this stage of care when an individual is medically stabilized, constantly monitored and assessed as to the nature and extent of his or her injury. After stabilization, some rehabilitation is often given at the hospital or at a rehabilitation facility.
While the individual may have survived a traumatic occurrence by virtue of timely acute care, unfortunately, he or she is often then discharged to home, frequently only to languish without further clinically relevant services or significant rehabilitation during this important “platinum post-acute period.” Treating physicians, families, friends and other caregivers simply may not have the expertise to formulate the kinds of specialized rehabilitation and treatment plans the individual needs in order to achieve a successful and sustained outcome from his or her injury. NeuLife does. NeuLife provides the level of care that can result in clients recovering to be better, stronger, more physically functional and more independent.
Think about it this way: Gold has traditionally been considered to be a store of value, although it is relatively abundant. Life is valuable too, so preserving it by appropriate, timely treatment during the Golden Hour is important. Like the abundance of gold, facilities and resources that are able to provide care within the Golden Hour are relatively plentiful. The rendering of acute care during the Golden Hour may result in the preservation of life, but may not result in much more. Platinum, too, has been a traditional store of value and it is generally deemed more valuable than gold because it is less abundant. Platinum is an industrial metal. It makes things strong, not just pretty. Just like NeuLife’s innovative care makes its clients strong, physically functional and independent, consistent with their physical and psychological abilities.
