I Can See Why I Came to NeuLife Rehab!

Understanding Vision Issues that Can Accompany Traumatic Brain Injuries

A variety of physical challenges can result from a catastrophic injury. Their type and  degree are determined, in part, by the location and the severity of the trauma. This is especially true with respect to traumatic brain injuries because  the brain controls all bodily and neurological functions.

Vision issues can be commonplace after a traumatic brain injury. Whether resulting from a catastrophic traumatic brain injury or a mild one, diminishment of vision can have a profound effect upon an individual’s independepence. At the very least, it implicates the individual’s ability to attend to his or her own activities of daily living. Once acute medical attention is rendered, a range of innovative post-acute rehabilitation will be needed. There is no better facility at which to obtain that post-acute rehabilitation than  NeuLife Rehab in Mount Dora, Florida.

While “vision” does equate with seeing objects, there is more to it than that. It also includes the element of how the brain interprets what is seen. Vision helps other systems of the body properly function, including cognitive function and ambulation. Therefore, when vision is impaired due to a traumatic mild or catastrophic brain injury or brain trauma, there can be a broad effect on wide-ranging elements of independence.

Again, depending upon location and severity, a traumatic brain injury can have an impact upon vision by damaging parts of the brain involved in visual processing and perception. These can include the cranial nerve, the optic nerve tract and the occipital lobe of the brain. The vision challenges that can result from a traumatic brain injury include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Decreased peripheral vision

Some of the practical, daily implications of vision problems caused by traumatic brain injuries are:

  • An individual needs a longer time to focus on an object, either close or at a distance
  • Printed numbers or letters may appear to be moving
  • Difficulty in reading a computer monitor
  • Pain or tearing in one or both eyes
  • An increased incidence of headaches
  • Difficulty in judging distance (depth perception)
  • Posture disturbances
  • Difficulty in engaging in recreational activities
  • Diminished mental focus (visual attention)
