How NeuLife Rehab Helps

The term, “coordination” can refer to different things depending upon context, however, there is a common denominator. The commonality is that it suggests that disparate elements of a process work together to achieve a common, desirable result. The process can be electrical, mechanical or of some other kind.

When it comes to the human body, “coordination” most often refers to movement, and moreover, the ability to move smoothly. Physiologically, it refers to the activation of the correct muscles at the right time in order to accomplish a specific task. The task can be as basic as moving a finger, a more complicated one like maintaining balance and walking, or very complicated ones like running, playing tennis or riding a bike. From a basic level of coordination an individual can progress to strength, flexibility, power and endurance, but coordination has to be there first.1

NeuLife Rehab in Mount Dora, Florida delivers innovative post-acute rehabilitation to individuals with motor coordination challenges. The superior care delivered by NeuLife Rehab recognizes that coordination results from the combination of body movements created with the kinematic (such as spatial direction) and kinetic (force) parameters resulting in intended actions of the limbs. Motor coordination is achieved when successive parts of the same movement, with or without the movement of other limbs are well-timed, smooth, and efficient with respect to the intended goal, such as walking.

In general, post-acute rehabilitation of an individual with a coordination deficiency will center on specialized rehabilitation designed to reintegrate proprioceptive information . Proprioceptive information is that which details the position and movement of the musculoskeletal system. The cerebellum of the brain plays a critical role in the evaluation of that information. As with other neural signals, proprioceptive information is transmitted through the spinal cord. Accordingly, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), a mild brain injury (MBI) or a spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in coordination challenges, broadly referred to as “ataxia.”

Although ataxia can be an outgrowth of traumatic brain injury (TBI), mild brain injury (MBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI), catastrophic injuries and multiple trauma can result in a variety of other physical, neurological, psychiatric and neuropsychological syndromes. Therefore, when an individual becomes a Client of NeuLife Rehab in Mount For a, Florida, he or she undergoes an independent functional evaluation administered by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals that may consist of:

  • Board Certified Physiatrist
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Psychologist
  • Board Certified Psychiatrist
  • Speech Language Pathologist/Cognitive Therapist
